Definitely not a fair comparison considering the different prices and purposes of the two lenses but worth noting if you're a photographer who's accustomed to using the very best.

On a positive note, I really liked how quietly the 85mm Micro focused, thanks to Nikon's SWM (Silent Wave Motor) technology and the fact that the lens barrel didn't change because of the lens' Internal Focusing system.

THE BOTTOM LINE

The Nikon Micro NIKKOR 85mm f/3.5G ED VR may not be the best lens on the planet but for close-up and some portrait photography, it's an affordable alternative to pricey pro glass. If you're used to using the very best lenses though, be forewarned: this budget-friendly macro lens may make you wish you had spent a few more bucks for the step-up model.

Pros: Relatively inexpensive; above average sharpness for close-up images; operates quietly; lens barrel doesn't extend while focusing.

Cons: Some lens hunting in low-contrast subject area; background blur not as dramatic as comparable lenses with faster apertures.

Price: $500
