Hahnemühle Sugar Cane 300gsm

Hahnemühle's been churning out eco-friendly inkjet papers for a while now through its "Green Rooster" environmental initiative and the new Sugar Cane 300gsm paper could be one of its best yet. What we like about Hahnemühle's papers made from renewable resources is not just that they're good for the environment—a portion of every purchase goes to an environmental cause chosen by voting on www.green-rooster.com—it's that they create very distinctive photo prints. We reviewed Hahnemühle's Bamboo 290gsm paper last year and really liked how it reproduced our images of nature, particularly a travel series we shot in the countryside of Japan.

While that paper might not have been for everyone—its slightly yellowy look and card-stock feel was only suited for certain subjects—Sugar Cane 300gsm should have a broader appeal. It has a natural white look with a slight textured feel that's OBA (Optical Brightening Agent) free, making it resistant to aging. (OBAs have been criticized for reducing print longevity.)

The paper is made from 75 percent sugar cane (bagasse) fiber, which is a by-product of sugar cane processing, and 25 percent recycled cotton fibers. According to Hahnemühle, bagasse fiber is endorsed by many environmental organizations worldwide as an eco-friendly resource.

The paper uses a premium inkjet coating to bring out bold contrast and detail, making Sugar Cane 300gsm ideal for warm-toned, color photos and black-and-white prints. Even better might be the "wow factor" of printing your photos directly onto a sugar cane substrate. How many photographers can offer that these days?
