Objects of Desire: Dell (Product) Red Studio Laptops with Artwork

Dell (Product) Red Studio Laptops with Artwork

Dell is not really known for producing laptops with any sort of style—they're Dells after all—but that's starting to change with some of their latest "(Product) Red" models, which feature fancy customized artwork. Along with looking good, the (Product) Red models have a charitable component as well, with $20 on each purchase of a Studio 15 or Studio 17 laptop going to the Global Fund which helps support AIDS programs in Africa.

The custom artwork on these models from artists Joseph Amedokpo, Siobhan Gunning and Bruce Mau is stunning, and while these 15-inch and 17-inch notebooks do not offer many extras in terms of technology, sometimes it's "better to look good than feel good," to paraphrase Fernando Lamas.

Our favorite of the four designs is the vibrant artwork from Togo-born, Nigeria-trained artist Joseph Amedokpo (see image), which is colorful and intricately detailed without being too garish. It's kind of what we imagine Keith Haring would have come up with had he grown up in West Africa.

It's a good thing this snazzy artwork has been added to these Dell laptops because otherwise they're pretty clunky, dull affairs. The basic model includes an Intel Pentium Dual Core processor (2.1 GHz), 2 gb of RAM, and yes, Windows Vista.

Cost: Dell Studio 15, $649; Dell Studio 17, $799
