Objects of Desire: Cozy Camera Bag

Cozy Camera Bag

Cold weather can kill your camera battery. That is why Vail-based photographer Billy Doran came up with the Cozy Camera Bag. Made primarily of neoprene (which Doran spent countless hours stitching material together from the remains of an old wetsuit to create the prototype) the Cozy Camera bag slides over your digital SLR to keep it warm and, well, cozy.

A light bulb went off in Doran's head when he saw photographers hiding their cameras inside their parkas during a cold weather shoot in Colorado. Along with the inconvenience of having to continually tuck your DSLR inside your coat, the quick change in temperatures can causes lenses to fog up. Instead of putting it inside your jacket, he thought, why not just build a jacket for the camera? Bingo.

Doran's bag has come a long way from the original design—which was drawn up on a cocktail napkin—and is now a very useful and highly functional product. After slipping the Cozy over your camera, a glove-like holster lets you slide your hand inside to access the shutter. If you're using a flash, another flap folds around the unit to keep it warm and preserve the battery. Along with neoprene, the Cozy Camera Bag is made with nylon and fleece, which will help carry the full life of the battery in cold weather.

How effective is it? It was recently used on a photo expedition that summited Mt. Everest and has been tested at up to 25 degrees below zero. Now that's cold!

Cost: $139
