Epson Stylus Photo R1800
This 13-inch wide printer has a feature set unlike any other on the market. At its core are seven individual UltraChrome Hi-Gloss pigment inks, plus a Gloss Optimizer cartridge, which helps to create more vivid, uniform prints with less bronzing. “Bronzing” can appear on glossy papers, making dark areas look bronze when viewed at certain angles. When activated through the print driver, the R1800’s Gloss Optimizer and Hi-Gloss pigment inks combine to produce an extremely smooth, mirror-like surface on glossy papers. The R1800 inkset includes Photo Black and Matte Black to help achieve optimum results on both matte and gloss/semi-gloss papers. Both black inks are installed at all times, eliminating the need to swap cartridges when alternating between printing on matte and gloss papers.
Media handling features on the R1800 include a built-in roll paper holder, rear paper feed for thicker papers, a top media feed for sheets as narrow as 3.5 inches, and borderless printing support for many paper sizes. To get your data moving quickly, the R1800 has both FireWire and USB 2.0 connectivity. How long will R1800 prints last? Independent longevity testing with a number of matte and gloss paper and ink combinations has yielded results from 100 to 200 years on a range of papers before noticeably fading. The R1800 also comes with a special tray and built-in software to print full-color images and text on inkjet-printable CDs and DVDs.

Retail price: about $550
