PRO HD350 Camera/Video Mask

Last month in this section, we reported on a new high-end, underwater camera housing that's custom built for the Nikon D700. Well, here's a new camera/video combination unit that's built right into an underwater housing that fits over your face.

Sound a little ridiculous? Perhaps. But the PRO HD350 from Liquid Image is actually a very well designed scuba mask that can help you photograph and shoot high-definition video of aquatic life at up to 330 feet below. And the best part is you can do all this hands-free.

HD video with the mask is recorded at 720p (1280 x 720) at up to 30 frames per second with audio. In the camera mode, you can capture 5 megapixels (2560 x 1920) still images. (We haven't been able to test the mask yet, but we don't expect the built-in lens to offer stellar sharpness.)

When you want to take a photo or shoot video, just line up the crosshairs on the inside of the mask on the fish or other sea creature in your sights, and press the large lever on the left side of the mask. LED lights on the inside of the mask tell you which mode the camera is in—video or still. The two modes are switchable via another large lever on top.

Once you get back to the surface, you can download your digital images and video with a USB cable that's provided or through a Micro SD/SDHC card. There's also 64 mb of internal memory. The Micro SD/SDHC slot lets you upgrade the memory to 32 gb. Liquid Image estimates that 1 gb of memory will let you capture about 30 minutes of video.

Cost: To Be Announced
