Objects of Desire: The Skylark LTD.June 2, 2009 By Dan Havlik
Employing her signature style of inserting real vacation slides into the design, The Skylark LTD. took Gramzinski three years to create and each new bag is literally made to order. (Though she sources out the sewing, everything else is fabricated by Gramzinski.) Along with hand-picking the slides that are inserted into the flap and sides of the bag— she originally used her own family's slides but now buys vintage collections from others—The Skylark LTD. is made from classic 1970s car upholstery which should give it a cool look and feel on hot and sweaty days. The adjustable seatbelt-style strap is locked in with an original airplane seatbelt clip while a serial numbered Naked Lady slide—another RedCamper signature—ensures that the bag you've purchased is one of a kind. The Skylark LTD. is also fully functional, providing enough room for a laptop of up to 15 inches, an iPod, cell phone, assorted chargers, notebooks, magazines, pens, and other goodies. There's also a business card window/holder on the backside of the front flap which locks down quietly with a magnet instead of noisy Velcro. The only thing we're not sure we're 100 percent comfortable with is that the bag is designed to vertically fit your laptop, which makes it look a bit "Euro" when you throw it over your shoulder. That's a minor quibble though especially since the slides Gramzinski chooses are as American as apple pie. "I choose images that reflect a genuine sense of curiosity about the subject being photographed," she tells us. "Almost all the images are from vacations—landmarks, people posing, cars, etc. I try to look for images that I think have interesting subject matter or amuse me in some way."
