NIKON D50

Nikon D50

This entry-level digital SLR strikes a balance between high performance and affordability. With a 0.2-second start-up for lightning fast readiness, the D50 can capture up to 137 JPEG images at 2.5 frames per second. Internal stats include a 6.1-megapixel Nikon DX format CCD sensor and custom image-processing engine, so users can create high-quality files especially when working with hard-to-capture scenes.
Shutter speeds range from 30 seconds to 1/4000th of a second, and with a high-speed synch up to 1/500th of a second, the D50 is great for fill-flash photography. As with the D80, an auto ISO mode allows the photographer to pick a specific aperture or shutter speed and have the camera select the best ISO for the combination given the available light.
As smart as it is fast, the D50’s auto focus system switches between AF-S (single servo auto focus) and AF-C (continuous servo) depending on the motion in the viewfinder. Nikon’s range of F-mount lenses works with the D50 as do the company’s new DX lenses. And with the same 3D Color Matrix II color metering system used by other members of the Nikon digital SLR family, the D50 has excellent image quality.

Retail price: $579.95 (body only), $699.95 (kit with lens)
