Why Can't There Be More Lenses Like This?

Sigma's new 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM is a lens that is aimed at the higher-end photographer, offering users "superior peripheral brightness and providing sharp, high contrast images even at the maximum aperture. Superior optical performance is also ensured throughout the focusing range. The super multi-layer lens coating reduces flare and ghosting." The lens is available in Nikon, Canon, Sony and other mounts.

So why aren't there more of these?

I spent a good two-hours on the phone yesterday with my cousin-in-law who is getting into digital for wedding shoots. A videographer switching to still (that might be a first) he's been looking for a good lens setup for his new gear. Everything brand-name with great qualities is also too expensive. Sigma and Tamron have a history of making some great pro-level lenses that are at a less-than-pro price.

The Sigma 50mm is designed to work with both APS-C and full-size sensors without creating chromatic aberration and it's looking like it'll be a great choice for the budget-conscious pro.

If only the world were full of these great lenses at a good price, no one would ever need a f/3.5-5.6 zoom again.
