Olympus Bumps E-Series Camera

Olympus has updated their popular E-510, replacing it with the new E-520. The updated body has a few cosmetic changes and a few under-the-hood updates. The rear panel uses a larger LCD screen and a slightly rearranged button design; from the surface it looks like the 510.

However, the 520 has a new 3.5 frames-per-second capture rate and a Live View mode, which allows photographers to compose images using the LCD screen instead of the viewfinder, most likely in a nod to the continued advancement of point-and-shoot familiar photographers into the SLR market.

The new body will ship next month (so I'd hold off on the purchase of that new 510 you were just planning) and wait for the new 520. The camera will be available either body-only (around $600) or in a kit with an ED 14-42mm f3.5/f.6 Zuiko lens, which will cost around $100 more.

The latest addition to the PDN family, the PDN Gear Guide in print, has a total circulation of 30,000, and covers the latest and greatest in photographic equipment. Initially created in 2006 to be the official guide to PDN's annual flagship photography event, PDN PhotoPlus International Conference + Expo, the PDN Gear Guide is now also available online for gear news and updates 365 days a year.
