Canon jumped on the iPhone app bandwagon this week with a new free application that lets you wirelessly print photos on your iPhone to select PIXMA printers.

The number of Canon printers that work with the app is pretty limited though. (And no, it does not work with Canon's top-of-the-line 13-inch PIXMA Pro9500 Mark II pigment printer.)

Compatible PIXMA models include the MP990, MP640, and MP560, which are consumer-oriented all-in-one injket printers with built-in Wi-Fi capability. They range in price from $150 to $300.

More details on the free iPhone app in the press release below.

CANON U.S.A. INTRODUCES EASY PHOTO PRINTING APPLICATION FOR APPLE iPHONE

In time for National Frustration Day, Application Makes it Easier than Ever to Print Photos "locked" in iPhone

LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., October 16, 2009 - Trapped photos on your iPhone? Wish you could send your photos to your printer with a few taps on the screen? Canon has an app for that. Just in time for National Frustration Day, Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging, unveiled a free iPhone application that enables wireless photo printing from your iPhone or iPodTouch to a compatible Canon PIXMA printer via a wireless network.

"Canon continues to make the printing experience as seamless as possible", said Yuichi Ishizuka, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Consumer Imaging Group, Canon U.S.A. "The addition of new technologies like the easy-photo print application for the Apple iPhone/iPod Touch makes it easier than ever for consumers to print the images they want from their favorite portable device."

According to NPD, only 15% of consumers move content off their cell phone to a PC or online. The new Canon Easy-PhotoPrint iPhone application is an ideal solution for consumers to clear out significant amounts of photos that often get locked in their mobile devices --and this doesn't have to be a rainy day activity. The application allows users to select multiple photos in a multitude of sizes and variety of paper types and print up to 20 copies at one time to the compatible Canon PIXMA printers including the MP990, MP640 and MP560.

In addition to the printing features, the application automatically finds printers on a wireless network effortlessly by using Apple's networking technology, allowing users to print their photos quickly and easily. For instant prints, consumers can start the camera directly from the Canon easy-photo print iPhone application and print captured photos instantly.

To order, consumers can download the Canon Easy-Photo Print iPhone/i Pod Touch App on the Apple iTunes App store at http://www.apple.com/iphone/appstore/ and install it. From there, users can simply select the application, select images, confirm printer settings and print.

The Canon Easy-Photo Print iPhone App is available for free download immediately and is compatible with all Apple iPhones and iPod touch devices
