Leica Adapters for Panasonic GH1 Might Not Be Coming to North AmericaMay 22, 2009 By Dan Havlik, PDN's Technology Specialist
Yesterday, the British Journal of Photography reported that Panasonic had introduced two new lens adapters that would allow you to attach Leica lenses to the G1 and the GH1, which use the smaller Micro Four Thirds imaging sensors. However, when PDNGearGuide.com checked in with Panasonic here in North America, those adapters don't seem like they're going to be arriving on these shores any time soon. "Panasonic has not announced these adapters for the U.S. market," said MeeJin Annan-Brady, Public Relations Supervisor for Panasonic North America. "We are currently studying whether to introduce them at a later date here." Though it seems unlikely that Panasonic would not bring the adapters to the U.S. at all since they would greatly expand the limited lens support for the G1 and the GH1, the timing is in question. Yesterday, during my keynote presentation at PDN's Virtual Trade Show, I mentioned the Leica adapters and how they would add another, much needed, dimension to the GH1, which is a "combo cam" that can shoot high-def video along with stills. According to the BJP, the Panasonic "M Mount Adaptor, DMW-MA2M, and R Mount Adaptor, DMW-MA3R, have been developed with the support of Leica Camera in Germany, making it possible to attach any M or R Leica lenses on Panasonic's DMC-G1 and DMC-GH1 cameras." |
