External Solid State Drives Increase Options

Not too long ago, I opined in PDN's Gear Guide that the SDD (Solid State Drive) market was about to explode. (Figuratively, not literally.) As a refresher, a SSD is essentially a large media card, only much bigger. It uses the same virtually-data-loss-free technology that powers CompactFlash and other solid state storage devices.

Now a hitherto unknown company named SuperTalent is making good on my promises with a range of external SSDs that push the current capacity envelope. The company's new MasterDrive external drives hit sizes of up to 120GB. The drives come in two flavors, MX and DX, with the MX being more bang-for-the-buck and the DX being a higher-performance unit.

The prices are reasonable as well (considering that they bring with them the promise of data-loss-free operation) with the 120GB model priced at only $699 and the 30GB at $299.

Photographers should be especially interested in the advances in SSD technology since it offers higher data transfer possibilities and data safety.
