Phase One P65+

We looked at the Phase One P65+ camera system in the May issue of PDN and were extremely impressed with the resolution and image quality -- though had some nitpicks about its build quality -- and now an image sensor testing group has seconded our opinion about the camera's IQ.

According to DxO Labs which launched its DxOMark testing service last year, the 60.5MP Phase One P65+ takes the lead in the overall DxOMark Sensor rankings with a score of 89 points. In particular, the PhaseOne camera system fared well in low-light testing thanks to its new Sensor+ technology which uses pixel scaling (or binning) to target noise when shooting at high ISOs.The P65+ is capable of shooting at up to ISO 3200.

Curiously though, in annoucing the new score DxO Labs makes no mention of the fact that pixel binning, which combines two pixels in to one, drastically reduces the resolution of the P65+ to just 15 megapixels.

DxO Labs also announced its findings for another top medium-format digital camera, the Hasselblad H3DII-50 which it says fared well given its release date -- 2007 -- with "very good Color Depth and Dynamic Range, but more limited Low-Light ISO performance."

Links to the DxOMark findings are in the press release on the next page but be patient, the site seems to be getting a lot of traffic from this annoucement and pages are taking a long time to load.
